Photos taken around 5 July 2006:

(Left to right) [1] This wide panorama photographed from Warilla Beach shows the northern breakwater rock pile (centre) and the extent of the sand to be traversed between the lake and ocean. [2] Telephoto shot taken from Reddall Reserve showing the works well underway in just the second week. The southern intermediate training wall is in front. [3] Pete the pelican doesn't seem to think the unobtrusive construction of protective rock structures detracts from the lake environment. [4] The pristine condition of the lake water speaks for itself, while the fisher-folk on the wharf and causeway are happy to catch a free feed. The Reddall Reserve causeway is designed to submerge during flooding and thus allow improved water circulation and flushing.

(Left to right) [1] The northern breakwater works photographed from the southern intermediate training wall. Note how the basalt rocks are not just dropped, but placed in jigsaw fashion so they cannot shift. [2] The sand flat remains relatively barren as the lake water level rises and falls with rainfall and ocean activity. [3] The southern training wall has been cordoned-off on the Warilla Beach side before pending extension work begins. Note how a gap in the southern training and intermediate walls was left open so the lagoon could flush. [4] Fishing off the breakwater structures has become an everyday pastime due to the great access allowed.

(Left to right) [1] Digging at dusk (winter). Fifty thousand tonnes of basalt was sourced from the North Kiama Bypass Project. [2] The southern intermediate training wall which stretches for some distance nearly all the way to the ocean. [3] This panorama shot shows the significant work required to construct just the northern breakwater. [4] The closed Lake Illawarra entrance - the culprit of many of the lake's woes and the expensive entrance works being undertaken.
