Thumbnail gallery - Kanahooka & Koonawarra region

(Page 2)

(Left to right) [1] LIA-contracted horticulturalists who are undertaking regenerative work along the lake's western foreshore from Koonawarra Bay to Elizabeth and Tallawarra points. Much of the scrub in the background, some of which was purposely planted many years ago before the LIA was formed, is today regarded as unwanted 'weed'. The plan is to remove all the weed, leave valuable flora standing such as casuarina and eucalyptus, and replant 5000 more natives. In the first photo a tiny casuarina tree has actually been planted, but at this stage it is near-impossible to see. [2]  The drill which quickly and effectively burrows a correctly sized hole so that the planting of natives can proceed rapidly. [3] A good shot of a casuarina seedling being placed into the burrowed hole. [4] Planted eucalypts are much bigger and stronger so they stand a good chance of survival. The area is former farmland, and luckily for the plantings is not heavily trafficked.

(Left to right) [1] The pathway in the foreground is where LIA construction has continued to-date. The middle headland is the area where the foreshore weeding and replanting mentioned above is taking place. Over the hill is the old Tallawarra Power Station site. In the background is magnificent Mt Warrigal, and behind that Shellharbour. [2] A closer shot of Mt Warrigal showing how close some regions of the lake can be across the waters, yet some distance remains when driving by road. [3] Looking north-east from the high hill behind the weeding and replanting works. In the middle is Kanahooka Point, in the background lies Northcliffe Drive. Note how the infamous Port Kembla Copper chimney still scars the landscape in the distance, although the plant has long-since been shut down. [4] A closer shot of Kanahooka Point and the Kanahooka Boat Club and jetties.

(Left to right) [1] The Kanahooka jetties right in front of the Kanahooka Boat Club. The area is excellent for sailing, fishing, walking, exploring... or just relaxing with or without the kids and having fun. [2] Two of the jetties in the vicinity. Locals and visitors often walk out to the tips of the jetties to gain a better perspective of the lake. [3] Just to the west of the Kanahooka jetties is the Koonawarra Bay recreation area. Here there are excellent and expansive grounds with multiple picnic and barbecue settings, even more jetties and a modern and fun large playground. There is also a village-style shopping centre and excellent parking right alongside the glorious lake. A better spot for all-round recreation would be difficult to find. [4] One of the car parks at Koonawarra Bay along with some of the grounds. The great playground and other car parks lie in the distance.

(Left to right) [1] Heading back north-west from the first photo in the row above, Kanahooka Point has rapidly become a sort of 'millionaires alley' with an abundance of expensive housing sitting right alongside excellent flat farmland and racing facilities, beautiful waters and natural bird sanctuaries. As we can see there is also another playground for locals and visitors to enjoy. [2] The birds absolutely love Kanahooka as it offers sanctuary from many winds and is a natural safe haven both relatively developed, yet remaining natural and quiet.
