The Lake Illawarra Authority was established in 1988 to
transform the degraded waters and foreshores of Lake Illawarra into an
attractive recreational and tourist resource with restored and sustainable
ecological values.
The Authority has the task of planning for and carrying
out works within the lake area that achieve the above objective.
Under the Lake Illawarra Authority Act (1987), the
Authority consists of ten part time members. Of the members there is one

representative from NSW Department of Primary Industries (Fisheries), one
representative from the Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority,
one representative from the Department of Environment and Climate Change
and five community members. One of the community members will be appointed
Chairperson.
Members are appointed by the Minister for Climate
Change and the Environment.
Membership is for a term not exceeding two years and
newly appointed members will cover the period September 2009 to August
